Overview

Spiders are commonly found in homes, offices, and warehouses across Pakistan. While most species are harmless and even help control other insects, their presence often causes fear and discomfort. Some species, however, can deliver painful bites. Spider webs also create hygiene and cleanliness issues in homes and businesses.

Identification

• Common Species in Pakistan:
  • House Spider (Tegenaria domestica)
  • Wolf Spider (Lycosidae)
  • Jumping Spider (Salticidae)
  • Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans) – rare but dangerous
• Appearance: Eight legs, two body segments (cephalothorax & abdomen). Colors vary from brown to black, with some having markings.
• Habitat: Corners of rooms, ceilings, basements, storerooms, gardens, under furniture, and cracks in walls.

Risks & Damage

• Most spiders in Pakistan are non-venomous, but bites may cause irritation, redness, or swelling.
• Rare cases of venomous spiders (like Black Widow) can cause severe reactions.
• Create cobwebs that make interiors look dirty and neglected.
• Can alarm customers in commercial spaces like restaurants and offices.

Signs of Infestation

• Presence of spider webs in corners, ceilings, or storage areas.
• Live sightings, especially at night.
• Egg sacs (white, silk-like balls) in hidden areas.

Prevention Tips

• Keep indoor areas clean and clutter-free.
• Regularly dust and vacuum ceilings, corners, and storerooms.
• Seal cracks and crevices around windows, doors, and walls.
• Reduce outdoor lighting to avoid attracting insects (spider prey).
