Overview

Ants are one of the most common household pests in Pakistan. While many species are harmless, some invade kitchens, contaminate food, and even damage property. Ant colonies can contain thousands of workers, making them difficult to eliminate without proper treatment. Their ability to build nests in walls, gardens, and under pavements makes infestations persistent.

Identification

• Common Species in Pakistan:
  • Black Ant (Lasius niger) – commonly seen in kitchens.
  • Red Ant (Solenopsis invicta) – painful stings.
  • Pharaoh Ant (Monomorium pharaonis) – spreads in hospitals and buildings.
• Appearance: Size: 2–6 mm depending on species. Color: Black, brown, or reddish.
• Habitat: Kitchens, bathrooms, gardens, under tiles, inside cracks and crevices.

Risks & Damage

• Contaminate food with bacteria as they crawl across surfaces.
• Painful stings (red ants) may trigger allergic reactions.
• Pharaoh ants are linked to spreading pathogens in hospitals.
• Can damage plants by protecting aphids that harm crops.

Signs of Infestation

• Visible trails of ants marching towards food or water sources.
• Small soil mounds or nests in gardens, pavements, or indoors.
• Winged swarmers (flying ants) during mating season.

Prevention Tips

• Keep food sealed in containers.
• Clean crumbs and spills immediately.
• Seal cracks, crevices, and entry points.
• Remove standing water sources.
• Trim vegetation near walls and windows.
