Overview

Bed bugs are small, blood-sucking insects that infest bedrooms, hotels, hostels, and even offices in Pakistan. They are hitchhikers, often spreading through luggage, furniture, and clothing. Bed bugs are difficult to detect early and can cause severe discomfort, sleepless nights, and social embarrassment.

Identification

• Species in Pakistan: Cimex lectularius (common bed bug)
• Appearance:
  • Small (4–5 mm), reddish-brown, oval, flat body.
  • Swell up and turn darker after feeding on blood.
• Habitat: Mattresses, bed frames, sofas, cushions, curtains, and cracks in furniture. Hide during the day and come out at night to feed.

Risks & Damage

• Bed bug bites cause itchy red welts, allergic reactions, and skin irritation.
• Lead to anxiety, stress, and loss of sleep.
• Infestations spread quickly and are hard to control with DIY methods.
• Though not known to transmit diseases, they reduce quality of life significantly.

Signs of Infestation

• Red, itchy bite marks in rows or clusters on the skin.
• Tiny blood stains or dark fecal spots on sheets and mattresses.
• Molted skins or eggshells near sleeping areas.
• Strong, sweet musty odor in heavily infested rooms.

Prevention Tips

• Regularly wash and heat-dry bed linens, curtains, and clothing.
• Inspect luggage and clothing after travel.
• Vacuum mattresses and furniture frequently.
• Seal cracks in furniture and walls.
